Here is that fairy tale castle which was the model for the one used at Disneyland. Dad had a window poster over his desk which gave him a view of this castle from his office at Hughes.
King Ludwig built this castle and several others. He was amazingly creative, had a lot of money to spend, and not much else to do. He was the offspring of first cousins and his brother was declared mentally damaged early on, and most people thought he was definitely showing signs of nuttiness, if not insanity, as he grew older.
King Ludwig was the patron of the composer Wagner. This castle was built to honor him and his various operas. Ludwig didn't like going out in crowds, so this was his private theatre where Wagnarian operas and other concerts and plays were to be preformed for him.
This is the throne room. the picture is taken from where the throne would have been, but he was killed/died before he could finish the castle or put in a throne. The room is amazing! The floor is an elaborate mosaic and behind the dais are pictures of four Bavarian kings, and above that, Christ, the King of kings.
This view of the castle shows that it is not isolated, but has a village (and a lot of tourist stuff) around it. The smaller castle on the right we took some pictures of.
There were murals everywhere in the castle, with each room having as its theme a different Wagnarian opera. This one is in the King's bedchamber.
Here is the bedchamber, which had running water where you see the mirror and a hidden toilet.
The view of the valley below from the castle was one of the most amazing views I have ever seen!
This is the castle kitchen. It was really impressive and looked like a great place to cook! This part was actually where savory dishes were prepared, there was another kitchen that was clearly for pastries and sweets, with marble counters and tables and different sorts of cooking vessels.
This is the smaller castle on a nearby hill. It is occupied by a count or baron or something.

And this proves we were actually there and didn't just buy a CD of pictures (which is how we got pictures of the insides of the castle) to fool you into thinking we went there.

Amazing day of touring!Hopefully you can transfer all of this easily into Shutterfly and have your trip journal all finished! That castle is amazing!! I would LOVE to be there.

I was thinking those were some spectacular pics inside the castle and was wondering how you caught those w/o tourists. Good idea to get the CD. Are you also planning to see Ludwig's castle on the island? If you have time, I highly rec. it. It is spectacular!
