When in Rome... I think the locals must stay up late and sleep in because that seems to work best around here! After breakfast, we walked to the nearby store to shop for lunch and picnic makings for the next day's wandering and the trip to Milan. The picture below is the hill we walk up to get 'home.' Our apartment is just visible at the top right.
After lunch and a nap, we walked to the nearest Tourist Information booth to buy a Roma Pass. The Pass is good for three days transportation and two free entrances to any exhibit and a discount on the rest. We should have bought this the first day. The place we bought the Pass was beyond the Basilica and down the road next to the De Angelo Castle, pictured below. Does the Pope live here? Some mention was made in the brochure about 'Papal Apartments.' We planned to go to the Colosseum after getting the Pass, but realized it was too late in the day. So we decided to do what we had planned for the next day, a night walk through Rome, starting from where we were.
First, we crossed the Tiber River. The bridges are beautiful!
From the middle of the bridge, Ed took this shot of... um, this very large and impressive building that probably has something to do with the Vatican. Sorry!
We got to the Campo de Fiori (Field of flowers, but it was all restaurants, buildings and cobblestones) where the walk began after a 20 minute walk.
We wandered around there, going down quaint, narrow streets. So may interesting things to see! I have noticed that most of the vegetation is the same as Southern California, and the weather while we have been here has been like the best sort of California day!
We were actually killing time, waiting for the sun to go down, since this was supposed to be a 'night walk.' We had a nice supper of pizza and lasagna at a sidewalk cafe. Our waiter spoke American English!
